I will do all of the Valar, showing the origins of their names and tittles and the old root forms they came from. I'll go in order form greatest to least and do each wife as I go along.
Manwe: Leader of the Valar and Vala of wind. As a result he is the commander of all birds, especially eagles.
Man (Quenya) 'blessed' or 'unmarred'. It is amusing that the spelling for this is exactly as English 'man' and I believe it to be on purpose as the Elvish name for man is 'Adan' and means 'blessed' or 'unmarred'. There is a not next to 'Adan' that says "In reference to man as he was originally created. His unfallen state." The ending -we is a suffix in names meaning, 'very', 'extremly' or 'only'. The root is comes from is WEG which means 'man' in Sindarin.
Manwe is also known as Sulimo. Sul-wind, air, wings. Lin/lim-lofty, fair, perfect Sulimo is found under three root words. (Original 'stems') SUHYU, SUHU, SUFU (Quenya) meaning: air, breather, exhale, puff. Su- by itslef means 'noise of wind'. Manwe's old, orignal wind name was Saulmoth "Noise of Wind" but it was later worn down to Sulimo
Next post will be Varda.

Varda: Wife of Manwe. She was the first one aware that there was no light in Arda.
The root VARD has word stems such as 'to rule,' 'govern,' and 'queen.' In this case her name is usally translated 'queen'. In Sindarin she was called Bridhil for which no translation is given. The closest I can get to is 'silver' or 'sparkling birch' which would make sense as the Sindarin Elves were woodlanders.
Her original tittle was Tinwetari, 'Queen of Stars'. The root TIN has many derivatives of which a fear are 'spark', 'gleam', 'star', 'twinkle', 'quick', 'nimble', 'light', 'silver', etc. But she is more commonly known as Elbereth Gilthoniel, (Sindarin) 'Star-Queen Star-kindler' and is called that by nearly all people except for the High Elves who use her true name, Varda. EL-star BERETH-queen GIL-star, gleam, brilliant light THON-to spark, kindle, light -IEL verb suffix
Next post will be Ulmo

Ulmo: Second in power to Manwe, he has no wife and does not dwell in one place long. The name is Quenya and is given under the root ULU, 'pour', 'rush', 'flow fast', 'surge', ''spill'. Other roots are ULM- and ULU- which both simply mean 'to pour'. His Sindarin name is Gulma. The preffix being rooted to GUL- and GULTA- which means the same as the Quenya form.
He has many other names. Vailimo is his tittle meaning '(Artful) Vala of Vai'. He has a poetic name, Bairos, which is the worn down form of the original name, Belmoth. He has often been reffered to as i Cherweg a Vai (Sindarin) 'the Old One of Vai'. To explain the meaning of these names (Vailimo, Bairos, i Cherweg a Vai) I must explain what Vai is.
Vai: from the root VAYA, 'enfold'. Vai is the name of the Outer Ocean, Vaitya is the name of the Outermost Airs. Both are names for the atmosphere. In Sindarin the word is Bai-, thus Bairos is explained. Ros- means 'spindrift', 'spray'...thus 'Foam of Vai'.
The ending element to his name, the O, is an odd thing. Which is why I like his name so much! O is Quenya, being a poetic word for the Sea. So...Vailimo: 'Vala of the Great Vai.' Or, so as to be understood, 'Vala of the Incredible Sea'. But this does not refer to the sea...as in the ocean. The 'Outer Seas' are the Atmosphere through which Ulmo can move. He not only has power over the bodies of water, the springs, the brooks and the rivers. His strengh reaches to Vaitya, the protective blanket of the Earth.

Aule: Third in power, lower than Ulmo, his lordship is over all of the ore and the mineral, rock and materiel of which the earth is made. His name is found under the root OWO 'shaggy' (Quenya). However, Aule is never described as being shaggy. And all of the words which comes from this root mean 'hairy', 'fleecy', 'wooly'. I find this odd and it has never been explained.
His Sindarin name is Ola which was latered worn to Oli. The meaning is the same as it's Quenya equivalant...'shaggy'.
Aule is also called Tamar, and more popularly, Tamildo. Both of these names have many meanings. The simplest translation I can give you is 'Smithy' but that would deprive him of his real name... 'forger' 'smelt' 'copper' 'of copper' 'metal' 'of metal' 'cauldron' All of these are from the root TAMA.
His tittle is Talka Marda which is translated in the books as 'Smith of the World' (Sindarin). Another name in Sindarin is Martaglos. Also Tagros and Taglos all meaning 'Smithy'.
In poetry he will be referred to or spoken of as Ola Mar, a tittle made up of a combination of the Quenya Ola 'Shaggy' and the Sindarin mar 'of the world'. More accurately, 'of the home'.
Next post will be Aule's wife, Yavanna.
