If you have any questions on pronunciation or you're wondering how to say a word, name, or place; please, just post here and ask!
Values of consonants:
C always has the value of K even before an E. So celeb should be said Keleb NOT Seleb.
CH As in ‘Bach’. NEVER as in English ‘church’. So it will sound just like a C only more in the back of your throat, a harder C. Think Arnold Schwarzenegger and you should get it.
DH is a soft TH. As in English ‘These clothes’. So the mountain Caradhras should NOT be said car-AD-ras as they did in the movie but as car-ATH-ras.
G is NEVER soft, as in ‘gem’. It is always hard, as in ‘get’.
I Is sometimes used as a consonant and will have the value of Y
L Is flicked off the tongue. Some English examples would be ‘bell’ and ‘fill’. It simply gets more value.
NG Has the value of –ing. Like ‘thing’ and ‘sing’. But give the G more sound. Say ‘finger’. The –ing in that word is the one you want. This is a signature sound in
Quenya. It is used nowhere else.
R is always trilled. If its one R then you flip it with your tongue. If there’s two in the word then it will be rrrrrroled!
TY Do you know how the British say ‘tune’? It sounds almost like ‘chune’. This is also an only Quenya sound.
The vowels:
A ‘fAther’
E ‘gEt’
I ‘machIne’
O ‘fOr’
U ‘brUte’.
Diphongs: (vowel combinations)
UI as in ‘ruin’. Not one sound but run quickly together.
OI is just like it looks. It will sound like ‘boy’
AI will be said ‘eye’
AE will also be ‘eye’.
AU as in ‘sour’. So Sauron will sound like ‘SOUR-on’.
EI will be said as in ‘grey’. Nice long sound.
Combinations:
ER is never as in ‘fern’ but is said as in ‘air’.
IR is never as in ‘fir’ but as in ‘ear’.
UR is never said as in ‘fur’ but as in ‘poor’.
